Chick rearing under a broody hen

Chris and hens

Trying to dig in the hen run.  Sometimes our hens are just too tame!

Hens in barrow

Happy chickens: stealing worms from the compost!
Our 24 hens free-range as far as possible while protecting our vegetables - we let them range further in the afternoon when the have finished laying for the day.  We feed them on leftovers mixed with bran and a small quantity of corn (sweepings and weed seeds from a friendly farm) They are currently laying six or seven eggs a day (November 2009)

2009: A difficult spring this year with 4 out of a total of 7 queens not laying and needing to be replaced.  We have come to the end of 2009 season with 12 viable colonies - not a bad season; lots of calls about bees via the local council though many of there were from people worried about nests of bumble bees.  We try and re-assure people about bumble bees and persuade them to leave them be but sometimes have to collect the nest and move them to a better spot.
